Gasunie - shaping the energy system of tomorrow
The energy transition is one of the largest system transformations of our time. At Gasunie, we work every day on a reliable, safe and future‑proof energy system – increasingly with mathematics, data and models as its foundation. As operator and developer of large‑scale energy infrastructure, we ensure the transport and storage of natural gas while actively building new networks for, among others, green gas and hydrogen.
For mathematics students, Gasunie is a place where abstract theory becomes concrete. Optimization, statistics, network and systems theory, predictive modelling and algorithms all play a role in challenges such as capacity planning, asset management, network reliability, energy flows and future‑oriented scenario analyses. How do we keep an increasingly complex and decentralized energy system in balance? Which choices remain robust under uncertainty? These are, by definition, mathematical questions.
At Gasunie, you work in multidisciplinary teams alongside engineers, data scientists, IT specialists and policy experts, where your analytical perspective helps drive well‑substantiated decisions. Whether your interests lie in modelling, data analysis, simulation, optimization or AI applications, you will see a direct societal impact of your work – on both a national and international scale.
In this way, you contribute not only to technical solutions, but also to a more sustainable energy system for the Netherlands and Europe. At Gasunie, mathematics truly makes a difference – today and in the future.
My name is Harmen Kremer. I studied applied mathematics at UT from 1989 until 1995. My specialization was systems theory, stochastic processes. After my graduation I started my professional career at the NLR (Nationaal Lucht – en Ruimtevaartlaboratorium) where I was researcher in the field of air traffic management. In 1998 I switched to the telecoms industry as analyst/consultant for KPN Research in a department called PPR (planning, performance and reliability). In 2003 KPN Research was incorporated into TNO where I worked until 2007. In 2007 I made a career switch to the gas trading company GasTerra in the energy sector. Within GasTerra I started as senior analyst and made my way to manager of the planning and optimization department. In 2019 I made my last switch so far and I am now working at Gasunie. Within Gasunie I have managed various departments (regulatory, market facilitation, capacity management, network development) and currently I am responsible for all asset data and stakeholder management with respect to the environment in which we work.
Throughout my whole career I benefited greatly from the knowledge and experience from the time that I studied applied mathematics. In my first jobs I translated problems in mathematical models and applied the technical knowledge and as manager now I benefit more from the way of thinking and approach to solving complex problems.
We are thankful and proud to announce that Gasunie is a sponsor for the AM-ACD of 2026.
