Chess tournament Tuesday 7 June 2022 12:38
Like in previous years the Ab-Actie organised a chess tournament for all its members. It consisted of seven preliminaries, after which eight players were left to fight for the title. Matthias Kruimer, who went unbeaten in the preliminaries, wasn't able to beat Gerbert Leeftink for the second time in the Semi-finals and Jasper de Jong beat out Bodo Manthey in the other semi-final. Leaving us with the classic match-up between Gerbert Leeftink and Jasper de Jong and this year Gerbert won out and is the chess tournament champion of this year. It was a great tournament with 30(!) participants and a lot of great matches were played, hopefully, we will get just as many next year and once again we would like to congratulate Gerbert on his win!

Flowers from the Education committee Thursday 12 May 2022 15:27
After getting recommended throughout the third quartile, the Education Committee has decided to give Matthias Walter a bouquet of flowers.
In this quartile, Matthias gave the course Mixed-Integer optimization. He put in a lot of effort into the course, which was clearly visible from the consistent quality of the micro lectures, as they were great to watch. On top of that we also applaud that it was easy to establish contact with Matthias as well as to receive feedback. These two factors resulted in a very pleasant experience for the master students who followed his course.
Therefore the Education Committee thinks that Matthias has definitely earned this bouquet. Thank you Matthias for all your hard work!

Introducing: bring your plants to the Abacus room & the summary database Thursday 21 April 2022 17:12
Do you want to breath more oxygen in the Abacus room? Have you always missed something green in the Abacus room? You can do something about this! We want to boost the appearance of our association room by adding some plants to the interior. Therefore, if you have some spare plants, which are dying of neglect in your room, give them a new life in the Abacus room!
It is now possible to share the summaries that you made long ago for your courses, and will probably never use again, with Abacus members who still have to pass those courses. Simply bring your summary to the Abacus room or send a scan to the board. The summaries that we collect will be uploaded to the Abacus website, with credits of course, where they can be viewed by other students.

Flowers from the Education committee Thursday 17 February 2022 11:31
After the 2nd quartile, the Education Committee has awarded Felix Schwenninger a bouquet of flowers.
During last quartile and semester Felix put lots of effort into accomodating students and their needs when it came to its way of teaching. He was open to discussion and easy to reach out to for help. He also dedicated his free time to his students by organising extra not planned sessions whenever asked by the students or whenever he felt the students could use some extra support. He has shown to be understanding and patient and to have great attention for his students.
Many students were able to appreciate Felix's efforts and his dedication deserved to be rewarded.
Thank you for your hard work, Felix!
We hope many more students can enjoy your teaching in the future.
AMEP 2022 Monday 7 February 2022 08:59
The AMEP (Applied Mathematics Educational Prize) is a prize given out yearly to one of the staff members of Applied Mathematics for their dedication to and passion for education and research.
During the Education Week, organised by the Education committee, three candidates, all elected by students, are given the chance to give a short mathematical talk based on a theme, different each year.
Last year Tracy Craig won the prize by giving a talk in theme 'Online Mathematical Education'.
This year, once again, we ask you to nominate staff members who you think should be appraised for their hard work.
If you think there is a staff member who deserves to be recognised for their efforts, don't hesitate and vote for them by following the link below.
See you all soon at the AMEP!
