New functionality on the website Wednesday 2 November 2022 11:06
Since the summer holidays a lot of new features have been added to the website.
To start, you can now search through all the quotes on the quote page and find out what crazy things you said while at Abacus.
Secondly, you can now find summaries of all your favorite subjects under 'Exams'. If you have a summary that you want on the website, send it to education@abacus.utwente.nl.
There is now also a section for the Game of the Week, where you can leave a review for your favourite and less favourite games.
Under 'Association papers' you can now find the freshmen mini-almanac, the Ideaal!, WHALEs and some other things, such as recordings of the Christmas stories.
Finally, under 'Education', a new section 'Bouquet' has been added where you can recommend a teacher to receive a bouquet from the Education committee!
NSC High-End 2022 cautionary announcement Friday 23 September 2022 16:50
This is a cautionary announcement regarding the Notebook Project High-End 2022 model, the Lenovo Thinkpad P15v 2nd Gen. In multiple instances we have found that users attempting to install a flavor of Linux, bricked (broken beyond repair) their solid state drive (SSD) either during installation, or shortly thereafter. This problem was reproduced together with the NSC.
If you use Windows (any release), and do not (intend to) install a flavor of Linux on your primary SSD you are not affected. We have no reason to suspect that using a form of virtualization to run a flavor of Linux (like VirtualBox, Hyper-V, Windows Subsystem for Linux) causes this problem. If you replaced the SSD you are also not affected.
The affected SSD is a Kioxia BG5. You can check if your laptop has one (most likely if you have not had it replaced), by opening Task Manager in Windows, and checking the disk tab. It should tell you the make and model of the hard drive installed.
There is currently no known cause of the problem. Users with broken SSD's may of course use their warranty to request a replacement with the NSC.
To avoid the problem simply do not install a flavor of Linux on the Kioxia SSD for the time being. Installing it on an external drive or USB-stick should not be a problem, and is the recommended workaround while the problem is investigated by the manufacturer.
If there are questions, we recommend you get in touch with the NSC by email, through nsc@utwente.nl

Flowers from the Education Committee Thursday 30 June 2022 12:11
In this quartile, the Education Committee has awarded Werner Scheinhardt with a bouquet of flowers as thanks for his care towards his students.
Throughout the quartile, Werner showed true enthusiasm for his work and a real appreciation for the contact with students. Many of the students following his courses praised the structures of his lectures and how approachable and clear he was when it came to questions, instructions and explanations. The students praising him also mentioned his ability to interest them in the subjects taught by him.
For these reasons, the Education Committee would like to show Werner gratitude for his contribution to education. Thank you!

Nelly Litvak Teacher of the year 2022 Wednesday 15 June 2022 10:49
Nelly Litvak is the winner of the Educational award and can therefore call herself UT Teacher of the year 2022. Thursday afternoon, in the finals in Waaier 3, she beat her colleague lecturers Farid Vahdatikhaki, Ipek Seyran Topan and Wallace Corbo Ugulino.
Each of the four of them gave a guest lecture in the half-filled lecture hall Waaier 3. Litvak, professor of algorithmic complex networks, got those present to think about the term ‘distance’. In her lecture, named From A to B and Beyond, she sought interaction with the public through a short quiz. She showed, with the assistance of a picture of Manhattan – a borough of New York – how to calculate distance in a certain way: the Manhattan metric.
The patience of the lecturers and the crowd was put to quite the test after the lectures. It took the jury more than an hour to determine a winner. After that succeeded, Litvak was presented with a flower bouquet from jury chairwoman Anne Leferink, last year’s winner. The jury described Litvak as ‘patient and respectful’. She will also receive a cash prize of 2,500 euros and a certificate.

Chess tournament Tuesday 7 June 2022 12:38
Like in previous years the Ab-Actie organised a chess tournament for all its members. It consisted of seven preliminaries, after which eight players were left to fight for the title. Matthias Kruimer, who went unbeaten in the preliminaries, wasn't able to beat Gerbert Leeftink for the second time in the Semi-finals and Jasper de Jong beat out Bodo Manthey in the other semi-final. Leaving us with the classic match-up between Gerbert Leeftink and Jasper de Jong and this year Gerbert won out and is the chess tournament champion of this year. It was a great tournament with 30(!) participants and a lot of great matches were played, hopefully, we will get just as many next year and once again we would like to congratulate Gerbert on his win!

Flowers from the Education committee Thursday 12 May 2022 15:27
After getting recommended throughout the third quartile, the Education Committee has decided to give Matthias Walter a bouquet of flowers.
In this quartile, Matthias gave the course Mixed-Integer optimization. He put in a lot of effort into the course, which was clearly visible from the consistent quality of the micro lectures, as they were great to watch. On top of that we also applaud that it was easy to establish contact with Matthias as well as to receive feedback. These two factors resulted in a very pleasant experience for the master students who followed his course.
Therefore the Education Committee thinks that Matthias has definitely earned this bouquet. Thank you Matthias for all your hard work!

Introducing: bring your plants to the Abacus room & the summary database Thursday 21 April 2022 17:12
Do you want to breath more oxygen in the Abacus room? Have you always missed something green in the Abacus room? You can do something about this! We want to boost the appearance of our association room by adding some plants to the interior. Therefore, if you have some spare plants, which are dying of neglect in your room, give them a new life in the Abacus room!
It is now possible to share the summaries that you made long ago for your courses, and will probably never use again, with Abacus members who still have to pass those courses. Simply bring your summary to the Abacus room or send a scan to the board. The summaries that we collect will be uploaded to the Abacus website, with credits of course, where they can be viewed by other students.
