'The semigroup approach seeks to generalize methods that have been effective for linear ordinary differential equations to linear partial differential equations by extending the notion of the matrix exponential function into an infinite-dimensional context involving unbounded linear operators. This extension leads to the so-called strongly continuous semigroups.'
