About Jonne Poels

Jonne Poels

Dear reader,

Hi there! How did you end up here on this page of the Abacus site? In this piece, I will tell you a bit about my personal life and my life as a board member of W.S.G. Abacus.  I hope that you will like it!

So, who am I? I’m Jonne, I am 21 years old and originally I am from a little village called Sleeuwijk in the north of Brabant. Here I did VWO at Altena College. During my time in high school, I quickly discovered an interest in technical subjects. However, I had a problem with choosing what I wanted to do after high school. Physics, chemistry or economy, I liked them all! This is a problem when you have to choose. The common denominator? Mathematics! So, I decided to study Applied Mathematics.

During my time in high school, I developed a big hobby for table tennis and I trained 6 times per week. As a result of this, I was able to play at the top national youth competition. With my team, we ended up in 4th place in this competition. Fast forward to today, and I still love to play a good table tennis match.  I also think that this is where my competitiveness comes from, I always want to win. Most of the time I do, otherwise I find another way to win. Come and play a game with me in the Abacus room and you will find out…

Post-high school, I had to figure out where to study mathematics. This decision ended up being quite easy. I was already quite familiar with the campus of the University of Twente as my brother was studying here. However, Enschede is quite a long way from my parents' home, almost 3 hours by train. Therefore, I had to find a room. I ended up in the student house Yupjum. This is a cosy house where we live together with 7 lovely housemates.

The first two years of the study of Applied Mathematics went by fast. So fast that I hadn’t quite figured out what I wanted to do for my minor, let alone my master's yet. This is when I decided that I wanted to be an Abacus board member. My mission? Explore, figure out what I like, and pick up essential life skills that textbooks don't teach you.

I hope this page of the Abacus site explains a bit about who I am. And as always 56 ‘vo and…
