Johann Hurink
The Chairman of the Day of our symposium 'Nature's Numbers' will be Johann Hurink.
Johann Hurink is a professor in Mathematics of Operations Research at the University of Twente and head of the Applied Mathematics department. Johann received a Ph.D. degree from University of Osnabrück (Germany) in 1992 and in 1998 he joint the University of Twente. Here he focussed on the development and application of optimization approaches for various domains and cooperated with researchers from different disciplines. Using his background in Combinatorial Optimization and Scheduling, in the last 15 years he mainly focuses on concepts and tools for decentralized energy management/smart grids. This has led to more than 150 publications in this domain and the development of a decentralized energy management toolkit (DEMKit) which is based on the conceptual results of his research group and is the base of many simulation studies, hardware-in-the-loop simulations, and field tests.
Apart from this, in the last 20 years he has taken a leading role in the Mathematics and Operations Research Communities in the Netherlands by being the director of the Dutch Network on the Mathematics of Operations Research (LNMB, 2010–2019), the chairman of Beta Research School for Operations Management and Logistics (2017–2020), and the scientific director of the 4TU Applied Mathematics Institute (2020-2024).
